Time For Cocktails: La Dura Vita, That's Amaro!

Trooper York puked all over my last cocktail comment thread, complaining that the Aviation sounded too sweet. Such a bitter blogfather. I should go clean up the mess, but perhaps I'll just walk away this time.

So here's a little something I found more up his alley. It's recipe based around a Sicilian liqueur called Averna Amaro. The recipe I'm using can be found here. I'm going to try it out.

La Dura Vita:

1-1/2 oz. gin
1 oz. Campari
1/2 oz. Averna amaro

Build and garnish with lemon twist. This one can be enjoyed at room temperature or slightly chilled. The Italians slug a shot of the stuff right out of the bottle after a heavy meal to aid in digestion.

Blogfather obviously has a bias against drinks which would suggest La Dolce Vita. I hope he can hold his liquor this time because this one's an after-dinner drink.

    But what's wrong with grappa?

  2. But what's wrong with grappa?

I left Italy in 1979 with three spirit souvenirs: a large bottle of Barbera piemontese made by the family I had stayed with that summer; a bottle of Asti Spumante, given to me to give to my mother; and a bottle of local grappa, which I had first tasted that summer. Of the three, only the grappa made it made it back to America--the other two were sad (and funny) casualties of my train ride from Torino to Paris.

  3. This bar's too fancy for me.

Speaking of gin, is there a big difference in martini recipes, or are they pretty much the same?

Our "house gin" is Gordon's, which is about as run-of-the-ginmill as at gets. We did a blind taste test several years ago and chose it against many others.

  6. When it comes to gin, de gustibus non est disputandum. Your mileage may vary.

  7. Thx chick. Sometimes I have a yen for a martini, and I'm not a big gin drinker :)
