Sitting around an apartment pool in LA twenty years ago, met a retired New Yorker from Brooklyn who'd served in WWII on a PT during the D Day invasion. PT boats on D Day were a little known fact, he pointed out. Of the small PT crew, he was the only Jewish guy and something of a novelty to his fellow crew members. After surviving D Day, they were sent to the Pacific, where their mission was to help retake many small islands which were under Japanese control, in preparation, as I recall, for an eventual invasion of Japan. The casualties were very high in these seemingly endless island invasions. He had pretty much given up hope of surviving the war, when one day they heard about a 'miracle bomb' that had been dropped on Japan which would force them to surrender. None of the men believed the report at first. It sounded too good to be true. But here he was, 40 years later, sitting around the pool, visited by his grandchildren, the nicest guy you'd ever want to meet, and still a bit incredulous to have survived the war.Marcy Casterline O'Rourkehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11891111277777024917noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6130126685334700207.post-6374728995683522002014-09-03T04:53:15.718-07:002014-09-03T04:53:15.718-07:00As usual, an interesting blog post. I didn't know that Pu was formed by chemical separation.

But...would he have named it Pu if he knew that Pluto would one be downgraded to a planetoid? ;^)LLhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05538854359365988863noreply@blogger.com
