I believe that Philippe was still alive at the time IIRC. I got close to him but I didn't shake his hand.

My dad wasn't a professional diver but he was into the sport starting in the late '50s. He was more like the guy in Sea Hunt, except we lived in Wisconsin. I did grow up knowing all the great dive spots.chickelithttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10773887469972534979noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6130126685334700207.post-51864280219977496332011-02-13T20:17:59.676-08:002011-02-13T20:17:59.676-08:00My father was a professional diver in San Pedro, C...My father was a professional diver in San Pedro, CA (where I was born) in the 1950's. Cousteau was in his prime then and my father knew both Jacques Cousteau and Jacques Piccard. I can't say that Cameron ripped off Cousteau, but he clearly took ideas from that very special for TITANIC. Art copies reality and sometimes reality copies art.

I met Cousteau when he came to Seal Beach, CA to visit the Beaver MkV, a deep sea submersible undergoing sea trials from the Rockwell Intl. Ocean Systems facility when I was a kid. My father worked on the Beaver and got me in to see the great man and shake his hand.

Cousteau remains a legend - and in my mind always will be.LLhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05538854359365988863noreply@blogger.com
